How to trade XAUUSD during NFP

Non-Farm Payrolls can move gold by $20–40 in minutes. Here is a calm, rules-based way to approach it — including when not to trade at all.

What NFP is and why gold reacts

Non-Farm Payrolls is the monthly US jobs report, released at 8:30 a.m. New York time, usually on the first Friday of the month. It shapes expectations for Federal Reserve policy, and with them US yields and the dollar.

Gold is priced in dollars and pays no interest, so it tends to move opposite to US yields. A strong jobs number that pushes yields higher usually weighs on gold; a weak one tends to lift it.

Before the release

  • Mark the day’s key levels: the Asian range, the previous day’s high and low, and any obvious support or resistance.
  • Check the consensus forecast so you know what counts as a surprise.
  • Close or reduce any positions you don’t want exposed to a spike.
  • Expect spreads to widen sharply in the minutes around the release.

The first 15 minutes

The first move after NFP is often violent and frequently reverses. Orders placed right at the release can suffer heavy slippage. Our approach is to do nothing for the first 15 minutes and let the initial spike and the spread widening settle.

A simple framework

  • Wait for the first 15-minute candle after the release to close.
  • If price breaks a marked level and closes beyond it, wait for a retest of that level.
  • Enter on the retest with a stop on the other side of the level, sized for 0.5–1% risk.
  • Take partial profit at 1R and let the rest run to the next level.

When not to trade

If the number lands close to forecast and price chops around the pre-release range, there is no edge. Skipping a messy NFP is a perfectly good trading decision.
