The 1% rule
Professional traders decide how much they are willing to lose before they think about how much they could make. A common rule is to risk no more than 1–2% of your account on any single trade.
At 1% risk, ten losing trades in a row costs about 10% of your account — painful, but survivable. At 10% risk, the same streak can end your trading.
